A City Frozen in Time

Baltimore remains locked in a bitter struggle against a historic arctic blast that has transformed Charm City into a landscape of ice and iron. Following a massive winter storm on Sunday that dumped between 6 and 10 inches of snow across the region, residents are now contending with what meteorologists are calling one of the coldest stretches in the city’s recorded history. With a State of Emergency still in effect and the Emergency Operations Center partially activated, today’s forecast offers little relief from the deep freeze as the Baltimore City Health Department’s Cold Blue declaration remains extended through the end of the week.

Morning: Bright Skies, Bitter Chills

Wednesday began with a deceptive coat of bright sunshine, but the clear skies offer no warmth. The National Weather Service (NWS) has a Cold Weather Advisory in effect for the Baltimore region until 11:00 AM today. Early morning temperatures hovered near 16°F, but with wind chills factored in, the air felt closer to a bone-chilling 6°F. Due to these dangerous conditions and the persistent ice on side streets, Baltimore City Public Schools are closed today. For those heading to work, the Baltimore City government has implemented a delayed start, with in-person operations beginning at 10:00 AM to allow road crews additional time to treat lingering black ice.

Afternoon and Evening: Clouds and Plunging Temperatures

As we move into the afternoon, the sunshine is expected to give way to increasing cloud cover. Temperatures will struggle to reach a daily high of 26°F, well below the seasonal average. Winds originating from the West-Northwest at 5 to 11 mph will keep the real-feel temperature in the teens throughout the day. By the evening, skies will begin to clear again, but this will only accelerate the drop in mercury. Overnight lows are predicted to plummet to 11°F. While the chance of new precipitation remains low at approximately 5%, the primary concern for the evening commute is the refreezing of melted snow on highways and walkways.

Safety Alerts and Vital Resources

Mayor Brandon M. Scott continues to urge residents to check on vulnerable neighbors as the city monitors for potential pipe bursts and hypothermia risks. The recently launched 'Baltimore Snow Corps' pilot program is currently active, matching volunteers with seniors and residents with disabilities who need help clearing sidewalks. Residents are reminded that while major thoroughfares are mostly clear, secondary roads remain treacherous. With sub-zero wind chills possible again tonight, the Cold Blue alert emphasizes the availability of emergency warming centers. Please remain indoors if possible and ensure all pets are brought inside as this record-setting cold snap persists.
