Baltimore Police Investigate 11-Year-Old Struck by SUV After Running Into Street Near School

Incident occurred near Green Street Academy during dismissal

Baltimore police are investigating a crash that left an 11-year-old boy injured after he ran into the street during an altercation near a West Baltimore school, authorities said. Officers were called at about 3:57 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2026, to the 100 block of North Hilton Street, where the child was struck by an SUV.

Police said the driver remained at the scene. The boy was taken to a hospital. As of Wednesday, Feb. 18, his condition had not been publicly released by authorities.

Video shows fight continuing after the crash

The incident was captured in video that circulated online, and police confirmed the footage is part of the ongoing investigation. Witness accounts described a chaotic scene unfolding as students were leaving the area around Green Street Academy.

“It was really disturbing… to see the fight still proceed,” a parent at the school said, describing the moments after the child was struck.

A student who said he saw the aftermath described seeing the child pinned beneath the vehicle and said he had known the boy since elementary school.

School response: support services and safety messaging

School leadership notified families that the school was supporting the student and his family and urged parents to speak with children about road and pedestrian safety. Counseling resources were made available to students.

Parents and neighbors in the area raised concerns about student safety during dismissal, including calls for additional crossing-guard coverage and security presence near the school.

Broader context: pedestrian crash trends in Maryland

The crash comes amid continued scrutiny of pedestrian safety statewide. Maryland transportation safety data show pedestrian-involved fatal crashes increased in recent years, rising from 124 deaths in 2019 to 153 in 2023. Over the same period, pedestrian-involved injury crashes declined, from 2,752 in 2019 to 2,503 in 2023.

Those statewide trends reflect a persistent challenge for city streets with heavy foot traffic, particularly during school arrival and dismissal windows.

What remains unknown

  • Whether the boy was a student at Green Street Academy or otherwise affiliated with the school
  • The extent of his injuries and current medical status
  • What, if any, enforcement actions may follow as investigators review video and witness statements

Police said the investigation is ongoing.
