CIAA Basketball Tournament Returns to Baltimore Feb. 24–Mar. 1, Triggering Downtown Lane Closures and Congestion

A week of games and related events concentrates activity in the city center

Baltimore is preparing for the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament, scheduled in the city from Tuesday, Feb. 24, through Sunday, Mar. 1, 2026. Tournament games are set for CFG Bank Arena, with additional public events planned at the Baltimore Convention Center and other downtown-adjacent venues during the same period.

The tournament has become a major late-winter draw for Baltimore’s hotels, restaurants, transit system, and street network. With most activity centered around the arena and the Inner Harbor/downtown corridor, officials are warning drivers to expect delays, particularly during evening game windows and on championship weekend.

Road and lane closures announced near CFG Bank Arena

City transportation officials have outlined a combination of daytime work-zone restrictions and event-driven nighttime closures that will affect core downtown streets in the days leading into and during the tournament.

  • Weekday downtown lane restrictions are scheduled for Feb. 23–27, including limited lanes at Baltimore Street and Eutaw Street during daytime hours.
  • Additional lane closures are planned in the arena area Tuesday through Friday nights, Feb. 24–27, generally during evening hours tied to event operations.
  • On Saturday, Feb. 28, closures are expected to begin earlier in the day and extend into the evening around key corridors serving the arena district.

The closure plan includes portions of Howard Street, Pratt Street, Lombard Street, and Baltimore Street—routes that also serve commuters, hotel access, and connections between Interstates and downtown garages. Drivers should anticipate shifting traffic patterns and slower travel times near the arena perimeter as volumes rise around tip-offs and post-game departures.

Transit and parking planning becomes central to getting in and out

With multiple high-attendance events concentrated within a walkable downtown footprint, organizers are encouraging attendees to use transit and existing parking garages rather than attempting curbside access near the arena. The city’s Charm City Circulator Orange route is positioned as a direct connection to the CFG Bank Arena area.

Beyond the arena schedule, the tournament week calendar includes a two-day CIAA Fan Fest at the Baltimore Convention Center on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 27–28, along with evening step shows at the convention center those same nights. This overlap is expected to increase pedestrian flows and shorten curbside loading zones around Pratt Street and adjoining blocks.

Long-term hosting commitment keeps tournament anchored in Baltimore

The CIAA has confirmed a long-term partnership that keeps the tournament in Baltimore through 2029. The 2026 edition continues the post-2021 period in which Baltimore has served as the tournament’s host city, with games and surrounding programming designed to extend beyond basketball into community-facing events across the week.

For downtown drivers, the practical takeaway is timing: congestion is likely to rise in the hours before and after evening games Feb. 24–27, and earlier on Saturday, Feb. 28, as championship weekend activity peaks.

Residents and commuters planning downtown trips during Feb. 24–Mar. 1 should consider alternate routes, allow extra travel time, and expect the heaviest slowdowns near CFG Bank Arena and the convention center during event windows.
