CIAA Tournament Day 3 in Baltimore Sets Semifinal Matchups After Four Quarterfinal Games at CFG Bank Arena

Quarterfinal day sharpens the field for Friday’s semifinals

Day 3 of the 2026 CIAA Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournament in Baltimore narrowed both brackets as four quarterfinal games at CFG Bank Arena determined the remaining semifinalists. The CIAA tournament runs Feb. 24–28 at the downtown venue, continuing a multi-year agreement that keeps the championship week in the city through 2029.

Thursday’s schedule produced two women’s quarterfinal decisions and two men’s quarterfinal decisions. By the end of play, Claflin and Fayetteville State advanced on the women’s side, while Bluefield State and Johnson C. Smith moved on in the men’s bracket.

Women’s quarterfinals: defense and late-game execution decide outcomes

In the first women’s quarterfinal, Claflin defeated Virginia State 56–42. The win was built around sustained defensive pressure that limited Virginia State’s scoring opportunities and created separation over four quarters. The result sent Claflin into a semifinal meeting with Winston-Salem State, scheduled for Friday, Feb. 27.

Later, Fayetteville State secured a 56–49 victory over Virginia Union. The seven-point margin reflected a game in which possessions carried increased value, with Fayetteville State creating enough scoring stability to close out Virginia Union and move into the semifinal round.

Men’s quarterfinals: one-possession finishes shape the bracket

The men’s draw also tightened with two games decided by two points or fewer. Bluefield State edged Claflin 70–68 in a quarterfinal that remained unsettled into the final minute. The outcome advanced Bluefield State to the next round with little margin for error, reinforcing how quickly the single-elimination format can turn on late possessions.

In the evening men’s quarterfinal, Johnson C. Smith defeated Virginia Union 64–63. The one-point result set up a semifinal appearance for the Golden Bulls and removed a Virginia Union team that had pushed the game to its final possession.

What Day 3 means for Baltimore’s tournament week

With semifinal slots settled, Friday’s slate becomes the pivot point between a weeklong event and Saturday’s championship games. Beyond the court, tournament week in Baltimore is structured around additional public programming, including fan and community events tied to the CIAA’s longstanding identity as both an athletics competition and a broader gathering for alumni and supporters.

The CIAA tournament brings men’s and women’s postseason brackets to Baltimore each February, with all games played under a single-elimination format at CFG Bank Arena.

Day 3 delivered the outcomes that define the rest of the week: the semifinals are set, and the tournament has moved into its final, highest-leverage stage.
