A 16-year-old boy died after being shot inside a home in North Baltimore, in the Medfield neighborhood, prompting an active investigation with no publicly identified suspect as of Monday morning.

Police said officers responded shortly before 6:30 p.m. Friday to a residence near the intersection of West Old Cold Spring Lane and Buchanan Avenue. The teen was found inside the home suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.

Family identifies the victim as Jayathan Day

The boy’s father, Dennis Day, identified the victim as Jayathan Day, 16. He said his son was not living at the home where he was found and described him as a caring teenager whose hope was for their family to be together.

Dennis Day said he has been in recovery for about two years in California and had been trying to reunite with his son. He said Jayathan had been staying in a home for teenagers somewhere in Baltimore while the family worked through those circumstances.

“Jayathan’s dream was just for our family to be together,” Dennis Day said.
