Howard County Police Say Ellicott City Woman Was Fatally Stabbed; Estranged Husband Surrenders Same Day

Suspect taken to hospital with self-inflicted injuries; charges include first-degree murder and protective-order violation
A 53-year-old man turned himself in to Howard County police Sunday after authorities said he fatally stabbed his estranged wife earlier that morning at a residence in Ellicott City.
Police identified the suspect as Alexander Stephenson, 53, and the victim as Amethyst Stephenson, 47. Officers were dispatched shortly after 8 a.m. to the 3400 block of Huntsmans Run for a report of a stabbing. Amethyst Stephenson was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
Investigators said Alexander Stephenson fled before officers arrived. Later Sunday, he surrendered at the Howard County Police Department station in Ellicott City. Police said he was transported to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center with non-life-threatening, self-inflicted injuries.
Police said the suspect is expected to be booked into the Howard County Detention Center after he is released from the hospital.
Howard County police said Alexander Stephenson faces charges of first-degree murder and violation of a protective order. Authorities also said he did not live at the home where the stabbing was reported.
The case is being handled as a domestic-violence homicide investigation, a category of cases that typically involves intertwined criminal, civil, and family-court histories. Protective orders are issued through Maryland courts to restrict contact and can include provisions such as staying away from a protected person’s home or workplace. A protective-order violation charge generally indicates investigators believe court-ordered restrictions were in place at the time of the alleged offense.
In the hours immediately following the incident, police had sought the suspect as part of an active homicide investigation before reporting his surrender. Such surrenders can affect investigative timelines, including the immediate need for wider manhunts, while still requiring detectives to establish a full chronology of events, collect physical evidence, and conduct interviews.
Key facts released by police so far include the approximate time of the reported attack, the location, the identity and ages of the victim and suspect, and the charges being pursued. Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the stabbing or the nature of the protective order, and no motive has been publicly stated.
Next procedural steps in cases of this kind typically include booking, an initial appearance before a judicial officer, a bail determination depending on the defendant’s medical status and custody, and subsequent court dates in the District and/or Circuit Court. Police and prosecutors also generally coordinate evidence review and charging documents as medical treatment concludes and the suspect is transferred to detention.
