MARC Penn Line Launches New Schedule Today

Commuters in the Baltimore region should prepare for a significant shift in transit patterns this Monday, March 16, 2026. The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) has officially implemented a major schedule update for the MARC Penn Line starting this morning. This change follows the completion of long-term Amtrak trackwork and affects several key departure times. Notably, Train 554 now departs Baltimore 15 minutes earlier at 5:15 a.m., and Train 502 has also moved its departure from BWI and Perryville earlier. In a positive development for local riders, the West Baltimore stop has been restored to Train 634. Commuters are advised to double-check the new printed timetables, as many trains have returned to their pre-interim status with additional minor modifications.

Overnight Closures at Baltimore Harbor Tunnel

For those utilizing the I-895 corridor, be aware that the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel begins a series of overnight lane closures today, March 16, which are scheduled to run through March 19. These closures for maintenance are expected to cause delays of 15 to 20 minutes as traffic is funneled into two-way operations within a single tunnel. Travelers are encouraged to use the I-95 Fort McHenry Tunnel as an alternate route during the late-night and early-morning hours to avoid these bottlenecks.

Light Rail Returns to Normal Service

There is good news for Light RailLink passengers today. The bus bridge that was in place over the weekend between the Camden Yards and North Avenue stations has been discontinued. Regular rail service resumed this morning at 5:00 a.m. following the completion of critical rail replacement work. While service is back to normal, the MTA suggests allowing for a few extra minutes of travel time this morning as the system stabilizes after the weekend maintenance period.

Major Roadworks and Construction Alerts

Several long-term infrastructure projects continue to impact major arteries around the city. Commuters should keep the following alerts in mind:

  • I-695 (Baltimore Beltway): Ongoing work on the Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) project continues between I-70 and MD 43 (White Marsh Boulevard). Expect periodic lane and shoulder closures as crews work on converting median shoulders into peak-hour travel lanes.
  • MD 45 (York Road): Waterline replacement near Towson University remains active. While much of the work is restricted to overnight hours, motorists may encounter shifted lanes and steel plates between the Towson Roundabout and Newell Avenue.
  • US 50/301 (Bay Bridge): Specific lane closures and traffic patterns are scheduled for the week of March 15–21, which may impact those traveling toward the Eastern Shore.

Finally, riders and drivers should stay alert for weather-related updates. The MTA has issued a notice regarding preparations for potential severe weather throughout the day on Monday, which could lead to further delays on both rail and bus lines if conditions deteriorate. Stay safe and plan for an additional 15 minutes in your travel budget today.
