Mayor Scott Activates Emergency Operations Center Amid Severe Weather Warnings
BALTIMORE — Mayor Brandon Scott has officially activated the City’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) as of 1:00 p.m. today, Monday, March 16, 2026, in response to severe weather forecasts predicting intense thunderstorms and the potential for tornadoes in the region. The activation marks a significant coordination effort between the Mayor’s Office, the Office of Emergency Management, and other city agencies to ensure public safety throughout the day.
The Mayor’s announcement comes alongside a decision by Baltimore City Public Schools to release students two hours early. Administrative staff and central office employees have also been authorized to complete their workdays remotely to minimize travel during the peak of the forecasted storms. City officials are closely monitoring conditions and coordinating with the Maryland Governor’s office, which has also issued a state of preparedness for the region.
“Our priority is the safety of every resident in Baltimore,” Mayor Scott stated during a morning briefing at City Hall. “We are urging everyone to remain weather-aware, secure loose outdoor items, and have a plan in place if warnings are issued for your neighborhood. Please stay off the roads if conditions deteriorate.”
Despite the weather-related disruptions, several government-related activities and sessions remain on the schedule for today:
- Charter Review Special Committee: A public input session is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. at Freedom Temple Church located at 2926 Hollins Ferry Road. This committee is currently examining the fundamental structure of Baltimore’s government and is seeking resident feedback on potential charter amendments.
- Water Advocacy Oversight: The Committee for Office Oversight for the Office of Water Advocacy and Customer Appeals is slated for a 4:00 p.m. meeting. This session is part of an ongoing effort to improve transparency and address long-standing concerns regarding water billing and customer service.
- National Representation: Baltimore City Council President Zeke Cohen is representing the city today in Washington, D.C., at the 2026 Congressional City Conference. Cohen is a featured panelist in a general session focusing on civic engagement and local leadership strategies for the upcoming national anniversary celebrations.
The Emergency Operations Center will remain active until the threat of severe weather has passed. Residents are encouraged to monitor official city communication channels and the local emergency notification system for updates regarding potential postponements of evening meetings or further service interruptions as the storm develops.
