MLK Day Parade and Reduced MARC Service to Affect Monday Commute

Holiday Traffic Overview
Today, Monday, January 19, 2026, Baltimore commuters can expect lighter-than-normal traffic during the morning and evening rush hours due to the Martin Luther King Jr. Day federal holiday. With many government offices and businesses closed, the typical congestion on major arteries like I-83 and I-95 will be significantly reduced. However, local disruptions are expected in the downtown area due to holiday observances and parades.
MLK Day Parade Road Closures
The city's annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Parade is scheduled to step off at 12:00 PM today. Significant road closures and parking restrictions will be in effect along the parade route. Drivers should avoid Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard between Eutaw Street and Baltimore Street. Heavy pedestrian traffic is expected in the surrounding West Baltimore neighborhoods from late morning through the mid-afternoon. Cross-traffic on streets intersecting the parade route will be held periodically as the procession passes.
Public Transportation Alerts
The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is operating on a modified schedule today. Commuters should take note of the following service changes:
- MARC Train: Operating on an 'R' (Reduced) schedule on the Penn, Camden, and Brunswick lines. While most mid-day and rush-hour trains are running, some frequent commuter trips have been canceled. Specifically, Penn Line Trains 455 and 454 will operate to assist evening travelers.
- Local Bus and Metro Subway: Running on a regular weekday schedule. Despite the holiday, these services will maintain standard frequencies for those heading to work or holiday events.
- Commuter Bus: There is no service today for most routes, with the exception of Route 201, which is running on a weekend/holiday 'S' schedule.
- Light Rail: Operating on a regular weekday schedule, though riders should watch for localized alerts regarding minor maintenance work.
Major Construction and Infrastructure Projects
Ongoing construction continues to impact traffic patterns throughout the Baltimore metro area. On I-695 (Baltimore Beltway), the Transportation Systems Management and Operations (TSMO) project between I-70 and MD 43 (White Marsh Blvd) remains active. While major lane closures are generally paused for the holiday, narrowed lanes and shifted patterns through the Towson and Parkville areas require extra caution. Additionally, bridge deck overlay work at the I-95/I-695 interchange may cause minor delays for those traveling toward the county line.
Harbor Crossings and Tunnel Diversions
With the Francis Scott Key Bridge replacement project still in its active construction phase, all hazardous material vehicles and standard traffic diverted from the I-695 crossing must continue to use the I-95 Fort McHenry Tunnel or the I-895 Harbor Tunnel. Increased volume is expected at these tunnel crossings throughout the day, particularly for northbound commercial traffic. The Seagirt Marine Terminal main gate is open today from 7:00 AM to 4:30 PM, which may lead to moderate truck volume near the Keith Avenue corridor.
