Health Commissioner Extends Code Blue Extreme Cold Alert

Baltimore City Health Commissioner Dr. Michelle Taylor has officially extended the Code Blue Extreme Cold Alert through Sunday, February 1, 2026. This extension comes in response to continued hazardous conditions, including single-digit temperatures and subzero wind chills forecasted across the city. Residents are advised that these extreme conditions pose a significant risk of frostbite and hypothermia.

During this period, the city has activated emergency warming centers and expanded shelter capacity for vulnerable populations. Residents are urged to limit time outdoors, dress in multiple layers, and check on elderly neighbors and pets. If you or someone you know requires emergency shelter or cold-related assistance, please call 311 or 211 to find the nearest available location.

Baltimore City Schools Weekend Activity Cancellation

Due to ongoing recovery efforts following the recent severe winter storm, Baltimore City Public Schools has canceled all weekend school activities for Sunday, February 1, 2026. This includes all athletic events, community meetings, and extracurricular programs scheduled at school facilities. The cancellation ensures that maintenance crews can continue clearing ice and snow from campuses safely.

District officials have confirmed that schools and administrative offices are currently scheduled to reopen for normal operations on Monday, February 2, 2026. Parents and staff are encouraged to exercise caution during the Monday morning commute, as some sidewalks and side streets may still contain patches of ice.

Department of Public Works: Trash and Recycling Update

The Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) has announced that residential recycling collections will remain suspended through today, February 1, following the winter storm disruptions. Regular recycling services are slated to resume on their normal schedule starting Monday, February 2. Residents who missed their typical collection window this week are asked to secure their materials until their next scheduled pickup day.

DPW crews have completed the shifted trash collection schedule as of Saturday. Residents are reminded to clear any remaining snow from their collection points to ensure workers can safely access bins during the upcoming week’s regular service.

Transportation Alert: Bay Bridge Lane Closures

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) has issued a traffic advisory for the week of February 1–7, 2026. Starting today, scheduled lane closures and modified traffic patterns will be in effect on the Bay Bridge (US 50/301) for routine maintenance and inspections. Motorists should anticipate delays and are encouraged to check real-time traffic updates before traveling across the bridge. Significant wind gusts are also expected throughout the day, which may lead to additional travel restrictions for high-profile vehicles.
