Public Health: Code Blue Extreme Cold Alert Active

The Baltimore City Health Department has activated a Code Blue Extreme Cold Alert, which remains in effect through Monday, February 9. Health Commissioner Dr. Michelle Taylor issued the alert in response to an arctic cold front bringing single-digit temperatures and hazardous wind chills to the region. Residents are advised that all city-funded emergency shelters are currently open to provide refuge for vulnerable populations. The Health Department is coordinating with city agencies to distribute meals to at-risk older adults and provide home weatherization services.

  • Stay indoors as much as possible and wear multiple layers of loose-fitting clothing if you must go outside.
  • Check on elderly neighbors and those with limited mobility to ensure they have adequate heat.
  • Ensure pets are brought indoors and have access to unfrozen water.
  • Use caution with space heaters and never use a stove or oven to heat your home due to carbon monoxide risks.

Public Works: Alley Clearing and Sanitation Update

The Baltimore City Department of Public Works (DPW) continues its dedicated citywide alley clearing operation to combat significant ice accumulation following recent winter weather. Utilizing heavy equipment, including bobcats and front-end loaders, private contractors and city crews are working daily from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. to restore access for sanitation vehicles. This operation is organized into four quadrants and will continue until alleys are sufficiently cleared for standard collection equipment.

Trash and recycling collection is currently following the regular schedule, though residents should expect minor delays in neighborhoods where alley access remains restricted by ice. Once a trash route is cleared, it will remain accessible for recycling collection. Residents who experience missed collections are encouraged to report the issue by calling 311 or using the 311 mobile application. Residential Recycling Centers remain open for drop-offs.

Transportation Advisory: Regional Lane Closures

The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) has announced lane closures and traffic pattern changes for the Bay Bridge (US 50/301) effective Sunday, February 8, through February 14. Motorists should also prepare for upcoming overnight lane closures at the Baltimore Harbor Tunnel (I-895), which are scheduled to begin on Monday, February 9. These closures are necessary for ongoing maintenance and safety inspections. Drivers are encouraged to plan for an additional 15 to 20 minutes of travel time during these periods.
