Woodlawn vigil renews calls for driver to surrender after fatal Baltimore County hit-and-run killed 20-year-old

A roadside memorial becomes a public appeal for accountability

A candlelit vigil in Woodlawn, Maryland brought family members, friends, and community leaders together at the site of a deadly hit-and-run that killed 20-year-old Christopher B. Teah Jr. The gathering served two purposes: to remember Teah and to press for information that could identify the driver who left the scene.

The collision happened near the intersection of Security Boulevard and Gwynn Oak Avenue, close to a bus stop and within a short walk of Teah’s home. Family members said Teah had just gotten off a bus and was crossing the roadway when he was struck by an oncoming vehicle. He was taken to a hospital and died the following day.

What investigators have confirmed so far

Baltimore County Police are investigating the crash as a hit-and-run. Detectives have asked the public for tips and are seeking a silver or gray sedan with front-end damage consistent with striking a pedestrian. Police have also released a public phone number for anyone with information to contact investigators.

Relatives at the vigil said the driver got out of the vehicle after impact, looked at Teah, and then fled. Family members argued that immediate action—calling 911 or attempting to secure help—could have changed the outcome. Police have not publicly confirmed that specific sequence of actions.

Family and community describe a young man’s life cut short

At the vigil, relatives described Teah as a lively presence in family settings, church, and community events. They said he also went by his middle name, Courage, and portrayed him as someone who brought energy and humor to gatherings.

A Liberian community leader who spoke at the memorial said the loss resonated beyond Teah’s family, emphasizing how a fatal crash can ripple through a neighborhood and diaspora community at once.

Why hit-and-run cases can hinge on public help

Hit-and-run investigations often depend on details that can be fleeting: vehicle damage repaired quickly, surveillance footage overwritten, and witnesses who may not realize what they saw. In this case, investigators are looking for a specific vehicle description and damage pattern, which can help narrow leads from body shops, cameras, and tips.

Police have urged anyone who saw the crash, noticed a damaged silver or gray sedan in the area afterward, or has relevant video to contact investigators.

The family’s public message at the vigil centered on a single request: that the driver responsible surrender to police and provide answers.
